- Save money on your water bill by fixing all dripping faucets and running toilets.
- If you have a bathroom not getting much use make sure to keep the p-traps in the sink and tub full of water by running the faucet(s) once every 2 to 3 weeks, this will prevent sewer gases.
- If a pipe bursts in your home the first thing you want to do before calling a plumber is shut off the main water valve. The main water valve should be marked or tagged, if not you can find it by the holding tank if you have a well, or before and after the meter if you have city water.
- Throw all food in the trash, never put scraps in the sink unless you have a garbage disposal.
- Before the freezing weather arrives make sure to drain all outside hose bibbs. Even if you have frost free hose bibbs, there is still a chance they could freeze and crack. It’s a good idea to have isolation valves to shut the hose bibbs off.
- Use cold tap water for cooking or drinking. If a recipe calls for boiling water make sure to use cold tap water instead of hot. Hot water can carry sediment from the water heater which isn’t healthy to consume.
- Turn the temperature on your water heater down to 120 degrees F. Hot water is more corrosive than cold water and you will extend the life of your water heater simply by reducing the temperature.
- Always remember if your garbage disposal stops working there is a reset button underneath you can push to see if that helps.
- Soap scum, stiff clothing, clogged pipes... sound familiar? You have tried everything and still can’t get your surfaces clean. Scale builds up causing dishes to come out of the dishwasher with spots on them. These problems occur because of hard water, but can be fixed. Water can become hard if it contains a lot of calcium or magnesium in it.… The solution is a water softener.
